DUKW Amphibious Vehicles

The DUKW amphiphibious vehicle isn't your everyday ride! During the early days of World War ll it was discovered that vehicles were needed to transport soldiers and cargo by land and sea. It had also been discovered that there was not a way to unload the soldiers and/or cargo in a place where the dock facilities had been destroyed or in an area where there was not a dock. The answer simply seemed to be to manufacture a vehicle that could do all of this so in 1942 General Motors Corporation designed a GMC truck that was enclosed in a water tight shell.

You might think these tours are called "Duck" tours because the vehicle has the ability to splash into the water, but actually the name is a military acronym. It is actually a DUKW (sounds like Duck) vehicle. D stands for the date they were made, 1942; U stands for utility purpose; K for front wheel drive and W because there are two rear driving axles. These vehicles not only played a major role in D-Day and WW II, but also the Korean War. You might not be surprised to hear that one of your ancestors had been transported by one of these vehicles.

Not only will you be enjoying the ride of your life, you will be experiencing a part of American history. So climb aboard and let's go!
